It’s VEGAS, Baby! (video)

cardio, MizFit Muzings, Videos

As I mentioned so subtly here Ive decided to run another half-marathon.

This proclamation was made much to the shock of Ren Man and, quite frankly, to myself as well.

The thing is I wanna give this whole race experience another try.

The Disney Princess half marathon was my first race ever and, on top of that, I received the invitation with only about five weeks to train.

(There was no way I was declining the invite, but the equation above definitely did not set this misfit up for success.  I was grateful simply to have made it through the whole shebang without injury.)

And, since we’re coming clean about all of our past transgressions (because we are, arent we?), here’s where I fully admit  I ran only five a handful of times before the race and never outside.

Yada yada yada Im ready to try it again so when Leah suggested we train together virtually I finally caved leaped at the chance.

She & I are still hammering out the details-but here’s where we are as of today:

  • We’re running the Rock & Roll half-marathon in Las Vegas on December 5th
  • I long for as many of you as possible to join me there physically but realize, unless I find us a Splenda Daddy, this may be cost prohibitive.
  • You may be thinking: You crazy, Miz.  Running is NOT my thing. Please to make note of the fact this race ROCKS for those who wish to walk a halfmarathon.
  • More than anything I want to drag the collective you along for the ride of making December 5th a day of goal achievement. Run your own personal half-marathon on a treadmill or in your ‘hood, find a 5k race to walk or run on 12.5, focus on making December 5th the day you walk further than you ever have before—you get the idea.  Join me virtually on 12.5.10 for a day of ACHIEVEMENT however you choose to define it.
  • Ill be posting about my training experiences, seeking *your input* on all things running/walking/stretching/CARDIOing (here’s where you pitch yourself, People!) & generally nagging cheering you all onward as we march together toward December 5th.
  • Id love for you to let me know if you’re joining me. Whether it’s literally in Vegas or virtually in any fashion.  Email me, tweet me, blog about it & send me the link.  In addition, for those of you on Twitter we’ve created a hashtag so you can follow each other & us as we whine our way through this whole shebang.  The hashtag is #MizBooRun( which makes this blogger giggle as, if said aloud, it sounds quite close to MISERABLE RUN.)
  • Lastly, there’s a reason I’m wearing a runningDRESS in the video-snippet above.  Another big motivator behind VEGAS as locale  is Ren Man & I plan to renew our vows that weekend (I plan to convince him it should be an all blogger/blog-readers invited event. When I share with you the deets of our FIRST wedding you’ll see why chances are he’ll agree).  I have delusions of being married as I stagger across the finish line (oooh, or this?)…but we’ll see.

So that’s the plan & Id love love love for you to join me in my new found goal date of 12/05/10.

Are you in?

Ready to git to it & set a SMART goal for almost six months down the road?

Have some goal-ideas & wanna comment’versate about em?

Longing to hear more about Ren Man & my first nuptials?

Please to hit us all up in the comments.

Edited to say: For some reason the formatting is wonked (technical term) if you view this post from homepage and not comments page.  Im fixing…

  1. If I am no in India…I will be in Vegas.

  2. Jess says:

Miz, you will know by end of August if I will be in Vegas. Finding out test schedule then planning my run! It’ll be perfect because I need to train for my Full (11.13.10). If I can’t be there, I will run a virtual race with you.

    Andddd, here’s to VFFs :)

By the way, I don’t care what they say about Vegas being “warm”, it’s going to be freezing cold in the early morning in December. Deserts do not fare well at night. So bring lots of layers aka gloves and princess beanie.

  3. Gemfit says:

I sadly won’t be able to join you in Vegas but I’ll figure something else out to virtually join you. I think I could aim for a virtual 5k around my ‘hood. How’s that for a plan?

I think you should renew your vows with a webcam present so we can all watch and be there!

  4. dietgirl says:

December 5 is traditionally the time that we juuuust start to lose the will to live here in dreary Scotland so will definitely find a sporty goal for that day!

Can’t wait to hear about the training AND the nuptials!

  5. Tia says:

I live in Utah which is pretty damn close to Vegas :)

I wouldn’t run with you but I would cheer you on in that kickass dress!!

  6. MizFit says:

hmmmm, off topic :) but is the layout WONKYSMOOSHED when you see it on your computer?
It looks normal here but a few people have emailed me it looks “smooshed” (?)

    :)

off to do my (waitforit) CARDIO!

    Miz.

  7. Lynne says:

(The post doesn’t look odd to me.)

I will do a 5k when you do your race.

Is it ok to just plan to run it on a treadmill at the gym?

    I’m excited about this!!

  8. Lance says:

    Run, Miz, Run!!!

    I’m in!!

  9. MrsFatass says:

I have to say, I am SERIOUSLY thinking that there will be a Fatass and her Trophy Husband crossing the finish with you! He loves the idea of Vegas in December, as do I. I do not love the idea of running a half, but if I can walk, too, then I’m totally in. And can we get the story of the first nuptuals, please?

  10. Jessica says:

    That’s awesome! Congrats!

  11. Helen says:

I can’t make it to vegas but I am in to run a half with you on the same day!
I LOVE your idea of making my own half-marathon too.

I will save the race fees and gather a gaggle of runner friends.

    Love the dress video!!!

  12. Helen says:

and the post looks normal to me.

  13. Runeatrepeat says:

Since I’ll be living in SoCal by then I am down for it! Yes!!! :)

  14. Joanna Sutter says:

You will rock that thon! I will give it some thought on how I can support you virtually…I have learned not to commit to anything before completing my first cup of coffee. ;-)

  15. Diane Fit to the Finish says:

I will support you in spirit! I just knew you might like running more than you thought. Maybe?

  16. Sandy says:

Thank you for that SMART goals link.

  17. Fitarella says:

    I. AM. THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(and no smooshing on this end)

  18. Leah J. Utas says:

I support you in spirit and I must insist on hearing about the first nuptials.

  19. debby says:

I will probably just join you in spirit, but this is the first time I’ve ever actually wanted to go to Las Vegas. What a great weekend that would be.

  20. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman says:

So if you renew your vows as you come to the finish line, that means he should run it with you, right? :) Sounds like a fun plan!

  21. Hannah says:

The nerd in me wants more info before I commit :)

I will do a 5k that day with you I THINK.

Either an official one or one just me and my dog.

  22. I’m in for *something* totaling a half on Dec 5th, whether it’s walking, elliptical-ing, biking, or some combination of all of those. It’s on my calendar…now!

  23. dragonmamma says:

Thanks, but I think I’ll relax and get a vicarious thrill out of out following your training. You have fun!

  24. Cindy says:

I must hear about the wedding and that dress!

Do you really run in it?

    Did it feel odd?

  25. Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind says:

    Thangs:

    - I’m in.
    - I don’t know what my goal is yet…lemme think.
    - Interested to hear about the first wedding.
    - “Comment’versate” = awesome

  26. the Bag Lady says:

Hmmm. Vegas in December vs Alberta in December….. wish I could say I’d be there, but I might be snowed in by then! Although Dec. 5th IS very close to my birthday, and a trip would make a nice present, wouldn’t it? Must talk this over with the Rancher.
In any case, I’ll be following along virtually, and cheering you on.

  27. Felice says:

Yay! So exciting. Wish I could commit to a half two months after giving birth but I’m just not sure that would be realistic :-)

  28. Hanlie says:

Of course I want to hear about the first nuptials! I love the idea of renewing your vows…

    Wow! You run fast!

  29. Lori (Finding Radiance) says:

I would love to hear more about the nuptials. !

I need to think of a goal for Dec. I have a lot of things planned into October, but things get sparse around here with cold and snow! LOL
Maybe 1 pullup instead of chin ups?

  30. Jody - Fit at 52 says:

I am not too far from Vegas.. but still too far. If I win the lotto, I will come even though I hate Vegas! :-) I will do a virtual with you though & LOVE the renew the vows.. I want to hear more!!!!!! I am headed into year 27 this year!!!! YIKES!

Can’t wait to hear more Carla!

  31. Skyler Meine says:

That might be a fun goal to shoot for. It would be fun to run in Vegas that time of year.

  32. Sallee says:

The post looks wonky to me too, Miz.

    Smooshed like you said.

    The video is fab!

  33. merrymishaps says:

I am seriously thinking about it. I’ve never been to Vegas, and I’ve wanted to run this race for a while. The husband’s down with it — he doesn’t run but he likes to tag along when I race in fun places!

  34. Ryan @NoMoreBacon says:

    Step 1: Get Azz Scoped
    Step 2: Get feeling better
    Step 3: Get MD approval
Step 4: Put feet on the pavement and go.
    Step 5: VEGAS BABY!

  35. Dani @ WRW says:

Your life is such an adventure! I love it! Best of luck with your training. =)

  36. biobabbler says:

hmm, very interesting proposal. can’t believe it but it IS making me think about running-I do miss aspects of it, but during the summer, REALLY wish there was a good gym I could join ’cause it’s AMAzingly HOT here (over 100 deg.). You are making me think about it though… I heard there was a new owner at the ONE gym in our tiny town. Maybe I need to investigate… =)

ps layout looks fine, but I’d ask folks who see “smooshy” what browser they are using (and what version if they know). I’m using firefox (3.6.3) and it looks dandy.

  37. Yum Yucky says:

sheesh. All this half-marathon talk is making my knees hurt. But ya know, it is still a goal of mine.. right after I do my first 10K.

    Go Miz Go!

  38. Brandon says:

I would LOVE to do this race! It sounds like a really fun race, and it would be awesome to get to meet a bunch of fellow bloggers all at once. The main thing that could hold me back is cost, since I’m coming from Alaska. I have some frequent flyer miles I could cash in and likely get the ticket for free. Then maybe I can find someone to split a room with.

The whole renewing your vows thing is awesome. That’s really cool that they actually have something set up during the race, that would be a pretty unique way of doing it! I already told you on Twitter, but my wife and I renewed our vows in Vegas a few years back. In true Vegas style, it was done by an Elvis impersonator. He was definitely from the “thin” Elvis years, and my sister-in-law had quite the crush on him :)

This run is something I’d really love to do, and I’m going to start working my magic to see if I can make it happen!

  39. Christine says:

If I ever reach my Final Goal Weight, that includes an immediate, spontaneous trip to Las Vegas! If I can shed these last 20 pounds by December 5th, perhaps I can see you in Vegas!!!

At any rate, I put the event on my calendar and I hope to run the half marathon with you, even if it means running it on the treadmill at the gym. So…consider me in!

In the meantime, I haven’t got the slightest freaking idea how to train for such an event. Please offer training tips for the running-dummy like me.

  40. angela says:

If you find us a Splenda Daddy I am SO IN! Otherwise I’ll be there in spirit, or at least running around a local park that day. ;)

  41. Leah @Bookieboo says:

Dooood, I’m super excited to do this with you! XXOO

  42. Kyra says:

Totally love to hear about the nuptuals. I think it’s cool you want to renew your vows in Vegas Baby! Have a blast!

  43. Katdoesdiets says:

OH, I want to go, I want to go, I want to go. If I have some unexpected windfall I am totally there, otherwise I’ll start searching for another half to train in spirit with ya.

  44. Dawn says:

Mizfit, boy would I love to do this. So much so that I found myself looking up flights to Vegas lol. How cool it would be to see you and the RenMan renew your vows too. I just did my first 5k so the thought of a 1/2 marathon seems scary as hell to me lol. But it sure did get my heart racing lol. Maybe it is what I need, I’ll give it more thought.

  45. MizFit says:

you guys are AWESOME. Ill really excited about this.

    The greater THIS.

    The goalsetting THIS.

  46. Katherine says:

I would love to do this race; that’s awesome the Disney was your first. I am weighing the pros and cons of doing more races locally or a single race that I would travel to. Wanna come? answer: yes, absolutely

  47. charlotte says:

Good luck with your new training goal! I’m very excited for you - I’ve heard that race is super fun. I’d love to run it with you (mostly so I could see you and Ren man get married again! On the course, even!) but will have to settle for virtually. As always, I’m a runnin’ with you in spirit. And I’m wearing a dress. Because I LOVE dresses. Love.

  48. messymimi says:

Not able to get to Vegas, but I will set a goal to work the fitness program I have set up for myself and be as fit as I can be by that date.

  49. 'Drea says:

I will be rooting for you. I’m not much of a runner but I’ve been thinking about walking/jogging in a half marathon sometime in the near future; it’s just a thought for right now though. Of course, that’s how most things get started — with a thought; so, we’ll see…

  50. Robyne says:

I would love to go. I am training for a 1/2 in my hometown that will take place in September. I love long distance running. I am going to have to look in to getting to Las Vegas. I bet it is pretty flat there. I am not a fan of hills. Good luck. Would love to do some virtual training with you.

  51. Kellie P. says:

Can I come even if I’m not a blogger and just a great big I ? Mizfit Fan?!?! I’ve always wanted to do an out of state run. But, as a single gal, the anxiety of lone travel has been too high. It would be comforting to find a familiar face (and by familiar I mean I read Mizfit EVERY day and would immediately ask for a picture AND autograph for my fitness heroes wall of fame)

  52. Kellie P. says:

That was s’pose to say I HEART Mizfit. Not I Question Mizfit…LOL

  53. Sally says:

    I. Am. Doing. It!

On your race day I will walk a 5k around my neighborhood!!

Now I need to find a race ;)

  54. Ren Man says:

    I’ll be in Vegas, but I ain’t runnin’…

  55. MizFit says:

Im just honored youre here and commenting HusbandMan. Baby steps :)

  56. Nikki says:

    You go girl!
    You’re a pretty graceful runner!
Congrats on all this exciting news!!

  57. Nikki says:

    p.s

I’ll do a 5k walk around my town in support of you! Maybe I’ll even send you a video. At that time of year, I’ll be dodging the rain drops and walking with cement in my shoes so the wind doesn’t carry me away to never-never land!

  58. Renee says:

So exciting! You know I’m running a half marathon too on October 17th. We will be training together!

  59. Shelley B says:

Geez you run fast!!! Super-impressed, am I!!!

Excited for you and your half (and I can’t wait to hear the story of your wedding - please dish asap!) - as I will be just 2 weeks post half myself, all I can hope for is a 5K - which I will either find a race or invent my own (hah - and I will give myself another medal!). Wish I could be there in person, but I will be in spirit.

  60. Amanda says:

Love, love, love the running dress! You look fantastic.

  61. Mary Meps says:

Good luck to ya, Miz! I’ll be rooting for ya.

  62. Natalia says:

oooh, I would love to join you in Vegas! I would be walking though. Yes I would love to set a smart goal for tracking and exercising! :) I’ll have to write it up!

  63. Quix says:

Love it. No promises because I’m currently targeting a half in Nov and don’t think I can swing the airfare with all the other stuffs I have planned this year - but I will definitely be there in spirit. And do *something* besides butt-plant on the couch that day.

  64. Kimberley says:

Hahaha! I love it when the Ren Man comments.

    1. I would love to hear about the nuptials.
    2. I love Las Vegas.
    3. Anything is possible.

I forgot to mention I was laughing hysterically when you commented and used the name “OM.” I was wondering who that was…and was happy to see it was you.

Your post was wonkvision free for me…except I did see you running in a dress…

  65. T says:

wooo! brandon and i will find you somehow for sure!!! :)

(registering this week. it’s a little scary.)

  66. Pure2raw twins says:

Oh good luck with your training for your race! I have always wanted to do a Vegas race. My sister Jen has done 3 I think, and loved them. She has Lori and I signed up for more Disney races, two half marathons.

  67. Dani @ WRW says:

Going to be doing the virtual thing! Thanks for much for the inspiration. Signed up for a 5K that is associated with St. Jude’s Memphis Marathon week on December 4th. I’ve been wanting to commit to another 5K and just needed a push! So thank you!

  68. paula says:

First,I think its great you’re gonna do a half marathan in vegas…. and renew your vows. Can’t wait to read more about the training and the wedding plans. I will do a 5k maybe a 10k. I’m with you Miz…

The dress is super cute. I had to watch it like twice cuz you just run too fast.

    Paula

  69. FatFighterTV says:

Okay, seriously, I am seriously thinking about this! As you know, I am not a runner because of back problems, but when I saw that you could walk this - yep, I’m a walker walker walker! Vegas would be such a great place to do a half marathon, not to mention get away from the cold for a couple of days! Email me about this, okay???

  70. Melissa @MelGetsFit says:

Since I’m just over in SoCal, Vegas is only about a five hour drive for me. I am so there! Between working full time and starting back to school in a couple of weeks, I probably won’t have time to train to do the race. I will absolutely be there to be cheerleader for you and anyone else doing it though. Have cowbell, will travel! :D

  71. Kat says:

Ooh, I would love to join you! I am working on healing my hip and then am going to start training! Hoping to join @fitinmyheart at Disney in Jan. I think there may be enough time to do both if my hip cooperates…:-)

  72. Hannah says:

    How fun!!!

I am joining you and plan to walk my own personal 5k that day.

I will see how many friends I can get to join me in my neighborhood.

  73. Bea says:

    I would follow you anywhere.

I will look into Las Vegas.

    :)

  74. Laura says:

I’d love to say yes but live is nutso right now. Sounds Amazing….
Re. my training plan - I run with a group so we do 4 runs/week and I also do spin/core with them 2/wk. Running is one long slow run, one speedwork, one tempo and another steady state run. I will be posted my plan tomorrow…Can’t wait to start training again!

  75. Marisa (Loser for Life) says:

Looking forward to training virtually with you! I will be with you in spirit in December. That is if I am still alive after my half in Nov! ;)

  76. Terri says:

I will think of a SMART goal and join in the fun.

  77. Ron says:

Go Miz Go!!!! your going to become a runner yet!

  78. Mia Jones says:

I’m in. It’s on my calendar. I’ll do it right here in Alexandria VA….if someone wants to join me, let me know! I may run the whole thing, weather permitting.

  79. Katie says:

    I will walk a 5K that day.

I have never walked more than a mile.

THANK YOU FOR INSPIRING ME, Miz.

  80. Debra says:

You go Miz! I’ll be following your stories from Austin : )
And it is fun to see Ren Man commenting here today.
And no smooshing on my end. The blog looks good to me.

  81. Sagan says:

WALK the half? Oooooh if there wasn’t the cost I would SO be there :) I like the walking. Running can get to me sometimes.

  82. Dr. J says:

Great Carla!!! I like the half marathon distance. None of the suffering of the full marathon with all the fun from the crowds and racers!

  83. Shannon says:

How cool is this! Seriously! You have me thinking and I hate it when that happens because you know that Vegas is only a 4-5 hour drive from here. Hmm…

  84. DestinationAthlete says:

    SO TEMPTING!!

I would love to join you in Vegas…but the whole lackofvacationtimeandmoney thing really gets in the way. I will definitely be virtually joining you though!!

    COUNT ME IN!

  85. Priscilla says:

Hey there! Go you!! I don’t think I’ll run, but heck yea, I’d love to cheer you on. “Strangerfriends”, as you call us, unite!!

  86. Starfire says:

Alas, due to living down in the Land of the Long White Cloud (that’d be New Zealand for all the non-kiwis out there), I’m supremely unlikely to be able to join you in person.

But I can join you in spirit, and given that my longer-distance training for the April 2011 100km will be just starting to kick into higher gear at that point, there’s a good chance I’ll be either doing a half-marathon, or half-marathon equivalent somewhere out in the wilds west of my home city that weekend :-)

  87. Terri says:

    When will you know specifics??

  88. Bechtereva says:

Yeah, it’s good, very useful, thanks :)

  89. Rachel says:

Mizfit, one way or another I am with you - hope to come to vegas baby but if not will do something in my hood for sure!

  90. Ann says:

Okay…what happened at your initial wedding??? I am dying to hear about it. P.S. I am commenting as I am in the middle of a major life move from the west coast to the midwest - so you know it is killing me…

  91. Sam says:

Since I missed the first wedding many years ago, I would love to be there to see you guys renew your vows. But the running part - not so much…

  92. Renée (@lowfatpie) says:

I would love to be there, but quite a trek from the Netherlands. Will check out the racing schedule to see if I can do something around the same time at least! I wish I could go back to Vegas (got married in March 2009 there!), have great memories and would love to create even more!!
    xx

  93. Tabitha says:

I live in Utah which is very close to Vegas. I had this R&R half on my list of races I wanted to do this year. Up until now I hadn’t really finalized my plans. This just might be the thing that does it. I sent you an @ via Twitter to ask if you’d be runnning it. Now I know. :-)

  94. Rebecca @ How the Cookies Crumble says:

I’ll be running the Las Vegas Rock & Roll too! I would like to run the full but with my work schedule, will most likely be running the half!

  95. AJ says:

Congrats on your first half marathon. I did four half marathons in two years and loved it. It does take a LOT of time to train though. I eventually got burned out with all the running in inclement weather….pooring rain, snow, brutal cold, etc. It’s tough so I can appreciated all your hard work. I eventually switched to more of a weight lifting emphasis and have even started power lifting. I’m writing about my adventures at:
    atothejay.wordpress.com

I’d love to hear your comments and your own adventures!

  96. Elisabeth says:

Just when I think that I will be able to make myself abide by the “no races after August 7th” rule that I set for myself this year (I need to get married, take a honeymoon and make a baby…in that order), you throw this December 5th business at me.

I can’t say no to a challenge. I won’t be physically IN Las Vegas, but I will definitely participate virtually. If you determine that there should be organized regional races, I can help plan in the DC/MD/VA!

  97. Lisa says:

Good for you for doing another one! :) I would be happy to walk down my street! lol

  98. Brittany says:

    That’s great! Have fun!

  99. christina says:

Good morning. Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting on the heat. Yes, I usually run at 6 am or so. Just had a change of plans yesterday. When I start back at work in August, a lot of my short runs will have to be on the treadmill. This heat is yucky!

  100. AndrewENZ says:

I’m becoming more and more convinced that we’ll see you lining up at a marathon. :)

  101. Karen @ Not Just Celery says:

MizFit! I will be in Vegas running the half marathon with one of my friends who has also lost about 90 lbs! Hope we get a chance to meet up!

  102. Jill says:

I will be cheering you on from Denver!!! :)

  103. Lindsay says:

I may be in. I was just looking at the ad for this race in runners world and thought I’d love to do this. I just need the doc to clear me for running. Crossing my fingers!

  104. cheska says:

Wow! This is such a cool thing to do. Well, count me in virtually. I want to do the half marathon with you and everybody else joining in my own little way here in Manila. This is such a cool thing to promote Miz! Let’s go and train more, spread the word and recruit more mizFITS!

  105. Julie @ Hotlegs Runner says:

I’m going to do my very first full marathon here =)

  106. Brittny Mulloy says:

Brilliant post! Thank you so much. Spent so much developing on my localhost, then had no idea how to upload to my web host. This worked a treat!
