Tuesday Trends

First the tip (please to file under seriously does she think we’ve never heard this before? and then cross reference under no, People, but I am hoping to trigger an Ah Ha! moment in you).

Goal setting.

It’s that time of year my MizFit friends.

While many of us set fitness goals in January the greater number of us launch full fledged workout attacks/diet revamping & newer loftier fitness goals as bathing suit time approaches.

(brief aside. two things. first? MizFit does not condone this and actually adores the I dont give a crap care attitude. second? I actually overheard a conversation at a local park between two mothers where they were discussing dropping their carbs in anticipation of the community pool opening. Really, People, please to promise me that you shall never become that obsessed. It’s all about health: feeling better, living longer, living healthier.)

Whether your goal is rocking the tankini with confidence or running in your first race the most important things is setting S.M.A.R.T. goals (here’s where you hit print):

It’s really quite easy to do and, just as with our trunk stocking last week, sets you up for success with regards to goal achievement.

By way of example lets use my goal of incorporating more yoga/meditation time in my life.

S. Be sure your goal is specific. Quite. I will start doing my Rodney Yee yoga dvd 3 times a week at 715 pm whilst wearing my boxers and a tank top (yes, Im kidding, but you get the idea. details are key.)

M. Measurable. I will know my goal is accomplished when I do the above.

A. Attainable. The ole notion of setting ourselves up for success. For example, I shouldnt plan to have a yoga studio opened by mid-April.

R. Realistic. The goal should be one you are both willing and able to work toward. In my mind it should also be something you believe you can achieve (hello Law of Attraction!).

T. Timely. Set a timeframe (please to see “R” above) so that you have a sense of urgency or, as I like to say, a fire lit under yer arse.

My goal would then look like: I will be doing my Rodney Yee yoga dvd a minimum of 3 times a week at 715 pm whilst wearing my boxers and a tank top starting April first going through the summer.

Easy? Yes, in theory. Hard? For sure—-to put into practice.

Make sense? Confused? Hit me up in the comments.

Now, before we go and get too serious, organized & goal-driven I must share with you my guilty pleasure.

Im turning myself in.

I HEART the Warner.

Her show Workout? Im obsessed with the drama, nicknames, the tear jerking, the client successes, the birthdaycakeicingthick make-up worn in the gym by the trainers no less, the dogs, the dating—all of it.

season three starts April 15 and I already have my DVR ready (and am stalking trying to secure an email interview with Jackie. Any six degrees of Warneration out there?).

Anyone else care to out themselves (*drums fingers on desk*)?

Proclaim your Jesse/Rebecca/Peeler love?

Im waiting.

  1. Meribeth says:

HA! Look at my Myspace, Jackie, Jesse, Rebecca, Peeler and Zen are all there. I too love the Drama or as my Boston friend says “Dramer.” However, all this DVR’ing is wearing me out! If I do not have time to watch these shows when they are on, just when will I?

SMART is fantastic and I will use it with those I am coaching! Thanks!

  2. Kelly T says:

oh, SMART. Every new client I have to remind them what smart means when we discuss goals. More oftne then not a goal is “look good in a bathing suit” or “get in shape”. How do you know when you reach that?

  3. Kelly T says:

that was a rhetorical question. just so everyone knows.

  4. Gena says:

I was just yesterday thinking about making some new goals for a lot of areas of my life. Thanks for the push in the right direction!

Have never seen this Workout show. Could be it requires cable TV, or could be that Gena has no life. Can it be watched online? ‘Cause anything with stupid drama and icing-thick makeup while working out must be fun to watch!

  5. MizFit says:

Hey Meribeth—most things the MizFIt recommend she does (are there is the added—but the SMART GOALS?
    I do all the time.
your clients will love the relative ease of them.

WELCOME KELLY T! I giggled at your second comment and then was a smidge amazed that even in my tiredmamabrain state I got that it was rhetorical :)

And Gena? I PRAY help is on the way. somehow. someway. the mizfit shall lure the warner here. and when I do? IM GIVING AWAY A SET O’THE WORKOUT DVDS.

even if I have to buy them :)

    (it’s on bravo!)

  6. charlotte says:

I love yoga!!! Good luck with your goal. I seriously think it has helped me in every aspect of my life. Plus - Rodney Yee = Awesome. I have one video of him doing the poses in some sand dunes and the whole time all I could think was a) the man is built like a steel spring and b) HOW does the sand not stick to his speedo-clad butt? Seriously - did they grease him up??

Awww, don’t have TV so I can’t give an opinion about the show. And I so love giving opinions!

  7. Kim says:

I haven’t watched Workout yet (unless you count the clips on The Soup!) And SMART goals - I actually shuddered!! We have to make SMART goals at work - which reminds me - my work goals for 2008 are overdue - I better get cracking!!!

  8. workout mommy says:

    I love the SMART plan!

and I admit to being a Workout fan too and my tivo is locked and loaded for the new season. ( although I do wish they would do more working out and less making out! )

here is a question that maybe someone can figure out for me. I read (somewhere?) that Jillian Michaels is part owner with Sky Sport and Health. Does anyone know if that is true?

  9. MizFit says:

charlotte, there was a problem with your comment. so sorry. I looked like you said you HAD NO TV.

Kim? that made me gasp and laugh. SMART GOALS for work? I swear Im liking being po’ but being my own boss (kind of anyway) more and more.

    and W.O.Mommy? youre right.
    look here.

hot on Jillian’s tail (serious woman, watch yer latissimus dorsi :) ),

  10. Shelley says:

M, I’m with you on the employment (if only because of the opportunities for cozy pants) but my boss? She’s a bear to work for.

I love the SMART plan, too, and that you always have a good acronym. Awesome.

  11. Type (little) a says:

Am I the only one who is SO TOTALLY distracted by Rodney Yee’s package?

(PS I took a class with him in NY. SO EFFING HARD, but I was doing Jivamukti Yogi then, all bad-ass like)

  12. Angie says:

SMART plan is awesome! Might have to use that with my training clients! Love your blog….fun and informative!

  13. monica says:

I must admit, I have a bad association with the “SMART” system, only because my job uses the same acronym for its “personal development planning”. Then again, your explanation is VERY helpful for actually USING the SMART plan. If only my job had made their instructions so entertaining, I might have taken the HR formality seriously!

  14. MizFit says:

    Type Little? no.

    (oh and DETAILS PLEASE)

    Angie-thanks for stopping by!

and Monica? I laughed at your comment. duly noted I prolly (as the kids say) should never work in HR.

ANYONE? The Yee ALWAYS makes me recall this Illicit Yoga Love article from NY Mag.
A must read if you havent before and love the Yee (or his, errrr, package).

  15. Scrumpy's Baker says:

I do enjoy workout, but wish they’d focus a little more on the working out and a little less on the making out.

  16. Jen says:

I love SMART goals!! Goal-setting is such a powerful exercise and we often go about it all wrong.

My guilty TV pleasure is Rock of Love 2. So bad but I CANNOT STOP WATCHING!

  17. Randi says:

Ok I won’t say “look good in a bikini” any more around you. I agree it’s about the health and the confidence. However, the rapidly approaching warm weather (it’s coming right?) and the thought of bathing suits in public DOES provide a little more motivation.

    Also, must find this show!

  18. MizFit says:

I know, Scrumpy! I shall ask Jackie about it when we email for our interview (she says employing the Power of Positive Thinking)

Jen, you’re the 2946924th person to say that to me about ROL! why can I not find it watchable?!
    Must be me.

And Randi? Ill call myself out on this one (thank you) it IS about the looking good (for the MizFit it’s about keeping the Renaissance Man’s head turning).
I just giggled at the DROPPING OF THE CARBS for their time at the baby pool/community pool where the only males are other baby daddies.

  19. Meribeth says:

Oh, I think Type Little A is funny! Honestly, I have the same problem with Tony Horton.

Bad me, hey, but it really isn’t my fault, really, no, really!

  20. Eileen says:

Excellent post! I love the SMART plan. Oh, and I’ve seen Workout a couple of times, and I did get sucked into the drama. I’ll have to set my tivo for the new season.

  21. workout mommy says:

Mizfit, thanks for finding out the scoop for me!

  22. Kelley Burrus says:

I’m giggling at my workout “vision”. I have two versions-one for public and one for private. Giggling but I SEE IT clearly. Thank you.

  23. Meribeth says:

MIZZZZZZZ. You and I were all wired in on Guilty pleasures of television, then you totally disappoint me with ROL2. Uggh. Take off that bandana Bret! Not pretty…..

And unless one of those girls is a Mizfit reader/friend, can they not be found in the nearest TT bar? Why does he need a show to find them Just askin….

  24. Meribeth says:

    ? after them

  25. Trace says:

I’ll have to check out this Rodney Yee…yoga combined w/a nice package? Maybe I’ve been missing out w/my yoga & stress relief DVDs. We decided to set up an exercise room and I was skeptical, but I do use it a few times a week. I love my little work out space! I just began meditating regularly and I love it (on my mp3 player & so convenient). It’s become part of my nightly routine, plus it knocks me out.

  26. Mallory says:

I am obsessed with workout… I had my hair a la Jackie in season 1, such goodness. Some chick wrote her thesis about Jackie and was able to do some phone interviews… Miz, just say its all in the name of research! Good luck getting that interview and thanks for the Jillian info, I am obsessed with her show too!

  27. MizFit says:

Trace? You SO need the YEE. we all do.

And Mallory? picture of the hair please.

  28. Zandria says:

No way! That show is still on? I watched the first season, but I didn’t hear anything about the second and certainly not the upcoming third. I don’t watch a lot of TV though (and not anything on Bravo at all that I can recall, so that’s probably why I haven’t seen any commercials for it).

You’re right; the show is completely drama-rific and the trainers are totally “Hollywood.” But it’s still fun seeing the fancy gym and their workout styles in action. (Not to mention the buff bods!) :)

VERY COOL if you could get an interview with Jackie!

  29. Caution says:

Yes, I needed to learn about SMART. That will work so much better than simply saying, “I need to look better for summer.” Your blog really does help me :)

  30. Who Is Bret Michaels Dating says:

Good Day Guru, I fell blessed that I found your post while searching for who is bret michaels dating. I agree with you on the subject . I was just thinking about this matter last Sunday.

  31. Natalia Burleson says:

    Just printed! :) Thanks again!

  32. Kate says:

I have to laugh a little, because we use SMART in educaiton in devising IEPs for special education kids. I’m pretty familiar with SMART goals.

I’m not big on New Years Resolutions. I like to say I make plans, not resolutions. I also shy away from result based plans and focus on process based plans. (“I will attend fitness class 5x/week” as opposed to “I will lose 5 lbs this week.”) One of the problems with fitness outcomes is that there is so much ELSE… so much that’s out of our control… that impacts certain measures.

One of the things I find in both education, WL blogging, and life in general, is that people don’t understand the difference… and that they can’t be specific about their planned processes.

hmmm… this comment will turn into a blog itself.

    I’ll post on my blog.

  33. Dating In Germany says:
