Kitchen exercise. (kitchen’ercize? no? ok. it was worth a shot.)

Mon, Dec 22, 2008

Monday Facetime

Subtitle: After all the serious stuff we’ve been discussing lately I decided it was time for some levity.

The biceps exercise I mention.

The shoulders exercise I mention.

The triceps exercise I mention.

(good gosh those videos feel like they were filmed eons & not mere months ago. go figure.)

EDITED TO SAY: Im still collecting commentdonations here. I shall total christmas eve morning and announce that day. Looks like we’re heading toward 20cents a comment so that RM & I can reach our personal goal. I can admit we were hesitant to say that initially as we feared a spontaneous 100,000,000,000 comments and having to tap into the Tornado’s college fund.

  1. Moran says:

GREAT video Miz!!! And Happy Hanukkah!!!

  2. Amanda says:

But then that would probably mean something different… ;)

  3. Rocco Castellano says:

Leave it to you to figure out how to exercise while evading your Holiday company. Very fun and you look very nice in street clothes.

  4. FLG says:

Nice vid. I’m basically doing the split squat for my physio. Instead of using a chair to balance, I just keep my hand against the wall. They’re awesome, and I hate them :D

  5. MizFit says:

Leave it to you to figure out how to exercise while evading your Holiday company.

and Im totally set unless my inlaws read MizFit (rimshot?)

  6. Erica says:

    How cute is your outfit!

  7. SpinDiva says:

Great Video as always. Do we have to do these in the kitchen? How about the dining room or any room in the house for that matter, in which case these can be called homexercise? Hummmm…I’m terrible at making up names, oh well. I like the routines you show here. Thanks.

  8. MizFit says:

laughing SpinDiva as I read that as HOMERcize and immediately thoughts SIMPSON :)

  9. Linda/Hughsmom says:

You is 2 cute in your elfin leggins…

-10* in Wisconsin this a.m. I’m sure BL has it worse way up there in Canada, eh? Add in wind chill for -25* below.

I should chart how fast the K-9s can do their business….

    Make it a great day.

  10. Bea says:

I really am going to try this and I’m assuming you werent just messing with us? joking?? LOL.

and is that how you really dress??

  11. Evan says:

    have a great day Miz!
I am going to show the video to my girlfriend as she is always hiding int he kitchen when my parents come to visit and now she can DO something there!

    how did the fundraising go??

  12. Natalia Burleson says:

Cute outfit Miz! I have a problem doing the split squat, can’t get my let up on the chair. Not very graceful am I! ;)

  13. MizFit says:

natalia? please to enjoy merely standing or doing a little plie squat while you hide & raiseliftcurl your soupcans ;)

    And bea? Um, yes.

That, perhaps to a somedayTweenTornado’s chagrin, is MizFit out of her Nike trail shorts.

  14. debby says:

What a great idea. I don’t need to hide from relatives, they won’t be here for Christmas (thus the ‘all is calm, all is bright,’ Miz!) But I do need to increase my exercise quotient during this endless snow-now rain!

  15. Lynn says:

    Great tights!

And the instructions are to “curl” not “hurl” the soup cans? Just needed to clarify ;)

  16. The Bag Lady says:

It’s really hard to “hide” in Bag Lady’s ‘open concept’ floor plan house, and the stools at her island would make the split squats nigh on to impossible! BUT she might lead the entire family in a wee exercise routine….

And Linda? I’m afraid I do have you beat, temperature-wise, although this is NOT at contest I’m happy to be winning! It’s -38C here this morning, which in Fahrenheit is still damned cold!

  17. allie says:

    thank you for the links.

I am a new reader and had missed all those exercises.

perfect since I am trapped inside by snow!!!

can I comment again at your post from friday?

  18. RooBabs says:

I love you in your stripey tights. They are ever so cute.

This looks like a great (possibly painful after 20 reps) exercise, but I love that it’s functional.

I’m wondering, is it okay as a holiday guest to be the one hiding in the kitchen (or wherever) exercising?

Oh, and we’re having a heat wave here!! It’s 35 degrees- holy cow!! But we have yet another snow storm coming later today, which means the commute home will be a nightmare, and my run today will be plan B (the dreadmill). = )

  19. tokaiangel says:

Love the stripey legs, Miz! I vote for more streetclothes in Facetime.

Think my mum would hit the roof if she came into the kitchen and saw me doing anything remotely sneak-exercisey :( luckily I’ve pesuaded her to take me to the gym on Saturday, so we have a compromise. NOW all I have to do is put up with my step-dad’s snarky comments throughout an entire 90 minutes of my workout DVD for the rest of my stay….

I would say generally if you’re looking to keep active over the holidays, remember NEAT (Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) and get washing up, tidying up and bounding up and down those stairs to fetch granny’s slippers :)

    TA x

  20. MizFit says:

you knew it was coming TA.

and no sneaksneak exercise, Missy :)

embrace the holidays, writeyerassoff, and enjoy.

    xo xo,

  21. dragonmamma/naomi w. says:

To those who have never done split-squats before: please don’t try this out in front of a hot oven with an open door.

    Groovy tights, Miz!

  22. MizFit says:

(thx for the tights love. Id like to say Neimans for 800.00 but they are target for 3.99)

  23. Sagan says:

Am giggling because when I was doing split squats for the 100 reps challenge I was using a stability ball and fell over at least a dozen times. It’s a good thing we’ve got your videos to show us how to properly carry out these exercises!

I like exercising in unusual places, like the kitchen. Except at work its kind of awkward if I’m exercising in the back room and a client walks by to use the bathroom… I’m pretty sure they all think I’m crazy:D

  24. Lori says:

Yay - workouts and entertainment for DH an guests all rolled into one! I’ve never done split squats with a chair, I will do those this week!

  25. Rupal says:

Nice kitchen workouts Miz! Thanks for the video! BTW- canceled trip to ATX due to hubby falling ill. Will KIT!

    Happy Hanukkah!!

  26. ttfn300 says:

cookercize? love it, i’ll have to incorporate these :) but i’ll avoid lifting raw meat :)

  27. Jill says:

Miz you look so pretty!! Not that you don’t look pretty everyday, but seeing you in a different get-up makes you look extrapretty today.

    love those leggings!!

    Happy Hannukah & Merry Christmas!

  28. MizFit says:

    That made me giggle.

Up in herre? Canopenercize or microwavercize.

  29. Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter) says:

Love the tights. Great exercises. I keep a set of dumbbells in the kitchen, and these will be great to do while I wait for my cookies to finish baking…if I can get myself off the computer first. Thanks!

  30. Leah J. Utas says:

Gotta say this one scares me. I could feel my legs giving way underneath me as I watched. I would feel me not being able to do the rising part of the exercise. It’ll stick with me all day and I’ll have to try it to get it out of my system.

  31. Felice says:

Love those leggings. I wish my honking calves could look as cute in horizontal stripes. No go. But you look great in them! I’m jealous ;-)

    Great exercises!

  32. Merry Mary says:

Great video. Any kind of squats are not my favorite but those are great exercises.

    Cute tights!

  33. dr. wifey says:

soup cans for weights? EXCELLENT idea! BTW, love your kitchen

  34. charlotte says:

I want to comment on the exercises but I am too enamored of your stripey leggings to think straight! I LOVELOVELOVE! We are sisters in legwear I think:)

  35. Tricia2 says:

I thought canopenercize required wrist weights?

And I’ll be doing all kinds of things to make my limbs too heavy to hit/kick people who irritate me (they cluster near my parents’ house, even the ones who aren’t related to me).

And I second (or infinity) the you looking pretty and all kinds of adorable (in a good, I’l kick your ass if you piss me off kind of way).

  36. MizFit says:

    off topic disclosure.

a selfassigned MEME if you will:

Im addicted to over the knee socks (like these. CLICK HERE) and weird patterned leggings.

We are moving the Tornado to a big girl bed tonight and welcome all thoughtstipsandVISUALIZATIONSo’rest.

Yes. I can cook. do cook. just, since the Ren Man doesnt much care, choose to spend most of the time I’d spend doing that playing and just eating simply. If Ren Man gave a chickenbus Id definitely whip up some fancyfeasts in the kitchen and not just film there (believe it or not I get more than a few emails asking if I really dont cook.)

    hmmmm, that’s it.

  37. tfh says:

During the holidays, I usually can manage to fit in my runs (once I escape the house, nobody can catch up to me, I chortle wickedly), BUT the minute I try to sneak in some strength training a million kids and animals are climbing all over me asking questions and everybody else needs my help cooking/finding things/polishing off the pie. So. I am going to try to sneak some in here and there. Except for me it will likely become basementcercize or laundryroomercize- much better spots for hiding.

Yay for Tornado moving into her big girl bed! I don’t have kids and so all I know how to do is gushgushgush. By the tears and “mommymommymommy” part I’m usually outta there.

  38. bobbi says:

    love all these tips!

  39. deb says:

I am digging the Pippi Longstockings tights there!

Won’t be exercising in my kitchen. The spouse is home for 2 weeks, so I need trips to the gym to keep “justifiable homocide” off my record.

  40. Crabby McSlacker says:

What a great way to slip in a little exercise without bundling off to the gym!

I’m imagining my family’s reaction were they to catch me imitating you in the kitchen. They wouldn’t bat an eye at the split squat, but if I were wearing the tights, given my usual drab wardrobe choices, they’d really, really wonder what was going on.

You look so adorable in them!

  41. Katie says:

Thanks for the links I am a new reader and think I have missed a lot…I had no idea one needed to wear striped capris in order to work out properly!! LOL.

  42. Eileen says:

You look so cute! Thanks for the tip - love it!

  43. Miche says:

You look so great in your striped leg get-ups and dress! Exercises are such a good idea, but will I actually do these in the next five-or-so days? HOPE so! Got my chair and cans all set up in the kitch!

  44. Rose says:

What I would not give to see my mother’s face if she walked in on me doing these exercises.

she would think I had lost my mind.

there is a pretty good chance I have.

    love the leggings.

  45. runjess says:

Awesome exercise idea. Good to know that I can always cancel my gym membership if necessary.

  46. Vered - MomGrind says:

I love love LOVE your outfit.

  47. MizFit says:

    yep. gym membership. schmym schmembership.

Miz, who totally got gifted a new gym membership last night for hanukkah complete with DAYCARE!

  48. Mary Meps says:

Love your kitchen! Great tips on the exercises. I checked out the triceps as that’s my problem area [upper arm]. I’m hoping my new routine will make a dent …

  49. Rachel says:

Great ideas and exercises. I always forget to do split leg squats. You go on the donations. You are amazing.

  50. Erin says:

I sometimes throw these in at the gym and hold dumbbells which actually helps my balance somehow. I always get weird looks when I do it (use the bench instead of chair) but hot damn do these suckers work! Great video and I’l chime in for the 100th comment saying you look cute. Very cool about the gym membership!
Regarding transitioning to the big kid bed…the first few weeks were rough for us but then it worked out no problems really. We try and follow a routine of jammies, brushing teeth, reading or telling a story and then it’s lights out. At first we closed his door because we didn’t want noise distracting and enticing him out of bed but now he freaks out if we don’t leave it cracked open. We just repeatedly put him back in bed, calmly over and over until he stops. Also putting a favorite toy in time out helped get over the intial hump. I’m sure I could add things but this is getting way too long…if I think of anything earth shatteringly helpful I’ll shoot you an email. :) THANKS SO MUCH!!

  51. Pubsgal says:

This video warmed my Monday heart…I will definitely give that exercise a try, but maybe not in our (as my mom-in-law calls it) OAK or one-a$$-kitchen. I heart those tights, and you look so cute, Miz!

I think it would be HOMERcize if you use beer cans instead of soup cans…use those big ol’ oversized Fosters ones for extra effectiveness. ;-)

To all: Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Habari Gani, and Hau’oli Makahiki Hou!

  52. helen says:

I love reading your comments Miz as they crack me the hell up.

    too funny.

thanks for the arm exercises. I need those now and will need them more after my cookie filled christmas.

  53. Dana says:

And your kitchen is so clean!

  54. MizFit says:

    why THANK YOU myrealifesisterDana.

and thank you for not noting here, on a public forum, that I always stack the various & sundry chickenbus from the kitchen table *just* out of the camera’s view.

errrr, I mean it is always spotless up in herre.

  55. Erin says:

I love your tights! I hate split squats though. ;)

  56. FatFighterTV says:

LOVE the leggings! You are too cool.

  57. HangryPants says:

You hide from your holiday guests! I am appalled. :D

Love your little leggings. You are the cutest!

  58. Dara Chadwick says:

Love those “sneaky” exercises…it all adds up!

All of a sudden I’m craving soup, though.

  59. MizFit says:

and I laugh that, could you SEE my house, you’d realize there’s no hiding.

    Damn open floorplan.

  60. suganthi says:

Oh Mizfit, you are a total hoot. And might I add, that I am so excited to see the number of comments increasing for your other post.

  61. Fitness Surfer says:

Sensing the fashion diva within MizFit. I can put together jeans and a top with shoes, and know that my socks wouldn’t be white when wearing black pants. (which doesn’t mean i haven’t worn white socks with black pants).

Thanks for the exercise. That might be how I get my lower body workout in this week. Not sure if driving to the gym is safe with snow and frantic last minuet shoppers on the streets=)

  62. POD says:

Re Tornado’s fund, if you need more money, I can help by chipping in instead of chiming in (as per).
I love your exercise outfit. Stunning!

Happy Hanukkah - hope you made your menorah out of an old Reader’s Digest.

  63. Allie says:

Am I really the first one to say that I liked the exercise tips and the links AND I see some wine in that kitchen!!

  64. Marc Feel Good Eating says:

Allie says she saw some wine…..
    I’ll say it’s “Yellowtail” ;-)

Thanks for making me smile, cute cute video!

  65. Aka Alice says:

I soooooo could have used this yesterday, only I’d already had a glass of wine, and I’m sure I would have just fallen over.

    Happy Hanukkah!

  66. ashley (sweet & natural) says:

Hi - thanks for your comment on my blog! You seem to have a great community going on here. I’ll definitely be back to explore. :-)

  67. Ms. V says:

    I’m LOVING those tights!!!!

    Happy Hanukkah, girl! You rock!

  68. Juliet says:

I love the added soup cans for resistance! :)

  69. Jen, a priorfatgirl says:

ok ok ok - I always read your blog during the day, while at work. But the kid in me can’t wait to get home to check out your page AGAIN to watch the video - BUMMER they blocked youtube at work!

Thanks for being an inspiration mizfit!

    Jen, a priorfatgirl

  70. Sassy Stephanie says:

Ooooo I like your stripes. But I hurt watching you. I.am.so.sore. But, averaging 2 ell bees a week!

  71. Kel says:

You make it look so effortless.

  72. FrayedLaces says:

You always have the best tips!

And that is one smokin outfit!

  73. Momisodes says:

Love it! I can definitely do that. I have a cupboard full of cans :) What great tips!

    p.s. I love your outfit :)

  74. gina (fitnessista) says:
