No resolution. No cry.

Sat, Dec 31, 2011

MizFit Muzings

I’ve chatted ad nauseum about how I dont do New Year’s resolutions.

They frazzle me (I dont thrive on self-imposed life pressure).

They cause me to rebel (Im a grownup that way. It’s the same reason why, when Ren Man a trainer shouts EIGHT MORE REPS! I quit after 3…).

They, in my experience, set me up for failure.

I instead choose to think we’re gifted with the chance to make new and ‘better’ choices each morning.

Hell, each MOMENT we encounter a crossroads we’re given the opportunity to choose the path we most want for ourselves.

As a result, tomorrow is just plain ole Sunday around here.

No brand!new!plans!

No this year is going to be different because_____.

Sure, we may take the time to revisit our goals & mission statements (as individuals and as a family), but the revisiting is no more powerful or pivotal than it will be six months from now when we do the same.

I read a quote in a magazine recently which expressed perfectly why tomorrow is no different for me than any other day:*

Everyday is the first day of what’s left of your life.

(powerful stuff huh? the “what’s left” gets this 42.5 year old every time)

So have a happy & healthy today.

Have an exciting &  energetic tomorrow.

And remember: we’re never as far from our resolutions, goals, plans, or creating the life we want than our very.next.choice.

See you in 2012!

  2. Nelda says:

Tomorrow is just Sunday here as well.

Have a great last day of the year.

  3. Helen says:

I am the last of the resolutioners I guess.
I am going to rock 2012.

  4. Andrew(AJH) says:

Happy New Year Miz! I just know you will continue to be an inspiration to thousands, resolutions or not!

  5. Shelley B says:

Happy New Year - here’s to a great 2012, resolutions or not!

  6. Michele @ nycrunningmama says:

I feel ya, sister!!! Tomorrow is just another Sunday here as well…recovery run day. Tonight is just a Saturday night (hard to stay up late partying when my son likes to get up at 5am!) =)
Happy New Year to you and your family! Thanks for the inspiration this year - so glad I found you! xoxo

  7. Raelyn says:

I never comment, but the “what is left” got me as well.
    Life is so short.

    Happy 2012 Miz!!!

  8. Lori Lynn says:

I used to make resolutions, but have stopped making them the past several years, b/c they don’t last for me. I do really like that each day is a new beginning, not just a “year.”

  9. Olive says:

2012 is going to be great.

    I’m resolving it so LOL

  10. Fab Kate says:

I’ve found myself, for the first time this year, making resolutions of a sort, and seeing this New Year as a new turning point in my life. Tonight takes on profound significance for me as I prepare for my little girls to leave the nest, making a major move in my life, and making the changes that being unattached will bring (or offer) in my life.

and while I do still believe that EVERY day is the first day of the rest of your life, I also see 2012 as “The Year OF…”

  11. Michelle says:

I’ve done weight, tris, marathons, money saving.

This year..it’s just about honoring myself.every.single.day. I think that everything that I’ve ‘wanted’ will fall into place.

    Miz, you’re fabulous!

  12. Sheri - Motivation for Health & Fitness says:

I can’t get over this someone actually believes the way I do!!! I have always felt new years resolutions were a setup and meant for failure because for me they were! Excellant post and one I will be sharing!

  13. messymimi says:

    Yes and Amen!

Enjoy your next wise choice. Mine is to go exercise today, even though i want to skip it.

  14. Karen@WaistingTime says:

I’m with you:) Happy New Year!

  15. Runner Girl says:

No plans for tonight. No cry either!

    Happy New Years Mizzy!

  16. Hanlie says:

I am not going to attempt to write a novel while climbing a mountain backward, like so many resolutioners out there, but there are some things I would like to achieve in 2012. A lot of what I’ve done in 2011 have set the stage for that, so it’s basically a continuation, not a whole new ball game. Still, I’m excited.

  17. Molly Nitka says:

New Year, same old goal for me. Keep losing weight. I hear ya Miz :)

  18. Geeta says:

    I’ve printed that quote out.

  19. Quix says:

I party and resolve. However, Jan 1 does’t really hold any special power, it’ts just a convenient day to revisit my goals. I check in with them a lot more often than once a year!

  20. KCLAnderson (Karen) says:

A-feaking-men!! And I just adore, “no resolution no cry”! I found this quote the other day that resonated: “Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning, but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.” ~ Hal Borland

  21. Tamara says:

Here’s to all the ‘no resolutions’ people out there. Just another day to try and be the best we can! I do, however, use this time of year to let go of any negatives in my life. Want to start the year on a positive note! Blogged about it today!

    Happy Sunday all!

  22. Lisa says:

Yes! No resolution no no cry!

  23. Jody - Fit at 54 says:

I am with you Carla! Resolutions always made me feel like a failure so quite a few years back I did what you wrote below & I LOVE IT - from you:

I instead choose to think we’re gifted with the chance to make new and ‘better’ choices each morning.

Hell, each MOMENT we encounter a crossroads we’re given the opportunity to choose the path we most want for ourselves

Everyday is the first day of what’s left of your life.

we’re never as far from our resolutions, goals, plans, or creating the life we want than our very.nextCarlace.

Carla - there is nothing else to add from me - I AM WITH YOU!

Except that I am very lucky to have met you & learned so much from you! The happiest happy to you & your family & loved ones!

  24. Lori says:

May 2012 be the best year yet for all of us!

  25. lindsay says:

    Thank you!!!

  30. Alicia from Poise in Parma says:

A great reminder indeed. Happy new year’s to you and yours!!

  31. Mary Anne in Kentucky says:

I don’t do goals or mission statements, either.

When I first heard about New Year’s Resolutions, I tried to come up with some, but I couldn’t, so I decided they were pretty boring. Haven’t changed my mind in the fifty years that followed.

No resolutions, just resolve. I signed up for a five week boot can that starts tomorrow morning. Not to jump start my program, but to bump me up to the next level. Cheers Miz ( cue clinking fruity chia drink bottles)

  42. Charlotte says:

You and me both sister! I don’t do resolutions either. I guess I feel I’m goal-oriented and driven enough on my own without the post-it reminders. (But maybe that’s why I should?!) Anyhow, I’m sorry I’m so late with the well wishes but Happy New Year and I am so so grateful you are in my life!! Here’s to an epic 2012.

  43. Gretta says:

I love the line, ” we’re never as far from our resolutions, goals, plans, or creating the life we want than our very next choice.”
It’s so easy to make a resolution and project too far into the future what we hope to look like or hope to accomplish. It’s not about the distant future, it’s about taking the very first baby step. Just one step will lead to another and another. But I’m getting ahead of myself. One. Good. Choice. At a time.
